How Tumblr Could Be Better
I used to not like using tumblr. Now it’s kind of grown on me. However, there are certain functions that I think could make tumblr even better for everyone.
- Add a “Hide” function.
It’s the one thing that Facebook did right. Let’s be honest. On Facebook, you have tons of “friends” on your list…and you have no idea who they are. It also implies that you do not give a shit about what they’re doing on a day-to-day basis. That’s why you can hide their status in your newsfeed! Also applicable to those friends who post WAY TOO MUCH about their lives that you don’t really care for; you can hide theirs too!
Am I sounding mean? Probably. But let’s be honest, tumblr NEEDS a hide function. Maybe my posts are too long, and it makes your dashboard unattractive. That’s fine, I’m not offended. For me, everyone reposts the same thing. A LOT. Nothing wrong with that. I just like seeing new things.
As an added bonus, you could also hide the people who you don’t like following. Sure, you could unfollow them. But we all know that there are some people who would be butt-hurt by it for some reason. And no one wants to deal with those kind of people. It’s too much of a hassle. - Add a “Categories” Function.
Perhaps “Hiding” someone weighs on your guilty conscience too much. Well, then you’d be in luck with this function! Because now you can just categorize the people you’re following into a bunch of lists!
My lists would probably be called things like “People Who Post Funny Things”, “People Who Post Philosophical Things”, “People Who Get Way Too Personal in an Uncomfortable Way”, “People Who Complain Too Much”, “People Who Actually Post Original Things”, “People Who Post Philosophical Things to Hide the Fact That They Complain Too Much”, etc etc.
It’d just be nice to be organized, you know? - Remove the ”Play Music As Soon As You Open My Page“ function.
Nothing is more startling (and annoying) than opening someone’s tumblr page while it’s quiet, then all of a sudden hearing some crappy song that you know for a FACT that you hate. This happens quite often to me.
OK, perhaps they shouldn’t remove it COMPLETELY. Maybe just take out the function that makes it automatically play the songs as soon as you get on to someone’s page. Look, I respect that Adele or Rihanna or Drake has songs that define your feelings. I get it. But sometimes, I like listening to my music while browsing the web. And it sucks when I have to find your page and hit the “pause” button every time I look at your blog.
Again, those are just ideas. Purely based on my own selfish opinions.
